Details

Sandwiched between E2V (formally English Electric Valve) and the mainline railway, Marconi Ponds can be approached on foot from Central Park, Meteor Way, where there is a small pay and display car park or from ‘The Village’ just off Parkinson Drive. The site recently became a Nature Reserve covering 1 hectare (2.5 acres) and has ponds, woodland and species rich grassland.

Marconi Ponds has seen a number of uses including a source of brick clay following the opening of the railway in the 1840s, a Victorian tip and allotments. The ponds were dug to supply water to Crompton Works where The Village estate is today.

Common Reed and Reed Mace surrounding the ponds offers shelter for birds, fish and invertebrates. Kingfishers have been seen in the reed bed and herons feeding in the main pond. Frogs, toads and newts breed in the ponds and hibernate in the surrounding grassland. The wooded area includes Hawthorn and Goat Willow which are coppiced each year to form dense bushes, ideal for nesting birds.
